I love my daughter. I think she’s special and brilliant. She’s brave, and she can move any mountain. I believe that, but at age five she didn’t.

She came home one day telling me that she wanted to go to space. I was so excited, and we started talking about space. She quickly told me that girls couldn’t go to space. Well, that flew all over me, and I began to speak the truth to her. How on the world does a five year old think she can’t do something because she’s a girl? Not my daughter!

The truth is that she is made in the image and likeness of God and that her dignity, value, and worth have nothing to do with her being a girl, and her being a girl doesn’t diminish anything about her. God made her to do something amazing in this world and she can! We talked about listening to His voice, and then I started researching.

I was so fortunate to run into our friends Brad and Annie while Christmas shopping. She is a teacher, and she was able to help me find some great books to read with Lauren about women who could and women who did!

We’ve been reading them, and she loves them. I love them! I wish I had books like this when I was a little girl.

I think about women I know who struggle with knowing their value. I know women who don’t know that they can have a calling. Here’s what I’ve learned: these women learned to operate in the world this way when they were a little girls who were told they couldn’t do something.

Here’s the truth: if you want to see empowered women, start raising empowered girls!

Tonight Lauren asked to read our new book about Sally Ride, and she looked at me and said, “Momma, I can go to space someday!” I told her she could do anything, and that I’ll always do everything I can to help her with her dreams.

Never let your little girl be told or believe that she can’t listen to that still small voice that whispers a dream into her heart. Whatever that voice calls her to, encourage her to do it all for the glory of God.

I can’t wait to see my little girl go to space and chase down every dream she’ll ever have!
